Girondins de Bordeaux was established in 1881 as a shooting and gymnastics club. The club expanded into soccer in 1910 but only on a trial basis. Finally, in 1919, the club had its first full-fledged soccer team.
Bordeaux merged with Girondins Guyenne Sport in 1936 and became professional in the same year. Girondins de Bordeaux made their second division debut in 1937-38. They merged again with AS Port in 1940, and one of the major achievements in the Bordeaux stats comes from 1941. That year, Bordeaux won their first Coupe de final over SC Fives.
The club reached the top tier for the first time in 1949, and incredibly won the league in their first season. While Bordeaux didn’t win another trophy in the 50s, they remained highly competitive in the first half of the decade. Les Girondins were league runners-up in 1952, and made the Coupe de final in both 1952 and 1955. They were relegated from the first division for the first time in 1956.
Bordeaux bounced around divisions for a bit, but established themselves again in the first division under Salvador Artigas. They finished in fourth in 1963 and made the 1964 Coupe de final. Les Girondins were a bit unlucky not to win a trophy in the decade, as they lost in two more Coupe de finals.
Despite top all-time scorer Alain Giresse playing for the team in the 1970s, they declined immeasurably. Bordeaux shuffled through seven different managers and were near the bottom of the table on multiple occasions. Claude Bez purchased the club in 1979 and invested large sums in the club.
In 1984, the club won their first Ligue 1 and Coupe de double in 1987.
In 1989, Bordeaux made the Ligue 1 odds in 2009 to win a sixth league title.
Bordeaux’s last trophy was a 2013 Coupe de win, and the club subsequently declined. Amid financial struggles, the club was sold in 2021 and relegated in 2022. In fact, they were relegated further to the third tier due to financial issues but are appealing the decision.
Betting advice may suggest being cautious with Bordeaux until the club is in a more stable position.
