Los Angeles Kings Stats & History

Founded in 1967 as part of the NHL’s first expansion, the Los Angeles Kings had difficult times in its first few seasons. After consecutive seasons missing the playoffs, the Kings dealt for Red Wings’ star player Marcel Dionne. The forward would go on to become one of the greatest scorers in NHL history as he holds most records for the Los Angeles Kings stats.

Dionne formed the “Triple Crown Line” with Charlie Simmer, Dave Taylor, and Rogie Vachon- was elite in goal. Despite their best efforts, however, the Kings could not make it past the quarterfinals of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The team’s fortunes would turn when Bruce McNall would buy the Kings in the late 80s. He would replace the team’s “forum blue and gold” colors with what is now the iconic silver and black as a nod to the Los Angeles Raiders. McNall would then buy the sport’s greatest player in Wayne Gretzky.

“The Great One’s” arrival in Los Angeles not only boosted the team’s status but also popularized the sport in the region. Teams like the San Jose Sharks, and Anaheim Ducks would be created not too long after, while the Kings finally became a legitimate contender.

Gretzky would team up with Luc Robitaille and Oilers teammate Jari Kurri to lead the team to its first Stanley Cup Finals appearance. However, the Kings would lose to the Canadiens and not come close again during Gretzky’s stay. He would be traded in 1996 amidst a turbulent time for the franchise.

The Kings went bankrupt and were again sold during the start of the 1995-96 season. Los Angeles would go into a long rebuild, which won’t pay off until the late 2000s.

Los Angeles had accumulated several young stars like Jonathan Quick and Anze Kopitar. The team made history during the 2011-12 season as the first eight-seed to win the Stanley Cup. Two seasons later, it would win its second Cup.

In recent seasons, the Kings remain a competitive franchise that has found the patience to build slowly.
