Trey Lance Stats: New Cowboy With Little Playing Time
Dallas Hopes Backup QB Learns From Prescott

Seldom will a quarterback who has just played in eight career games garner the attention like Trey Lance. Most of that has to do with his draft pedigree. But Trey Lance has made four career starts and played in eight games in his two NFL seasons. The Trey Lance stats aren’t bad. But they’re also not what you expect from somebody drafted No. 3 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Despite playing three years at North Dakota State, Lance really had just one full season as quarterback. His freshman year in 2018 saw him get into two games even though he redshirted. He played just one game in 2020 due to COVID-19. North Dakota State was one of many schools that decided to play in early 2021. Lance decided to sit out those games to get ready for the NFL Draft.
But in 2019, he managed to play 16 games and his numbers were pretty impressive, as he led the Bison to the FCS championship. The Trey Lance stats show he completed 192 out of 287 attempts for 2,786 yards and 28 touchdowns. He didn’t throw an interception that season. But Lance could also beat you with his feel, as he had 169 rushing attempts for 1,100 yards and 14 more touchdowns.
Despite his limited playing time at North Dakota State, the San Francisco 49ers drafted him third overall, slightly higher than the majority of the mock drafts had him going.
San Francisco 49ers
Lance began his rookie season as the No. 2 quarterback on the team behind starter Jimmy Garoppolo, but did see a few plays worth of action in Weeks 1 and 3. In Week 4, Lance came in to play the second half of a game against Seattle after Garoppolo was injured.
With Garoppolo on the Houston.
Garoppolo returned the following week and was the only quarterback to play in the playoffs. The 49ers advanced to the NFC championship game before losing to the NFL football standings.
Lance was named the starter in 2022, but suffered a season-ending injury in the second game of the season.
In 2023, Lance was demoted to third-string quarterback behind Brock Purdy and Sam Darnold. Shortly afterwards, he was traded to the Dallas Cowboys for a fourth-round draft pick.
Career Numbers
Through his first two NFL seasons, the Trey Lance stats show 56 completions in 102 attempts for 797 yards and five touchdowns against three interceptions. As a starter, the NFL career.
