2023 NFL Spring Meeting Recap: Commanders Not Sold?

Fair Catch Rule Order of Biz at NFL Meetings

The 2025 NFL Draft Has Been Awarded to the City of Green Bay

The NFL owners‘ spring meeting saw some news actually come out of it and that is not always the case.

One of the bits of information is that Commissioner Roger Goodell’s contract is expected to be extended until 2027 according to multiple reports during the 2023 NFL Spring Meeting.

The owners did not vote on the group led by Josh Harris becoming the owners of the Washington Commanders. However, there doesn’t seem to be much standing in the way of that happening sooner rather than later as the nightmarish run of Daniel Snyder’s time as the owner of the Washington franchise has come to an end.

There is still some maneuvering going on. There are reports that Snyder has refused to be interviewed by attorney Mary Jo White, who was hired by the NFL to investigate the workplace environment during Snyder’s tenure as the Washington owner. Snyder is also seeking to keep White’s findings from going public. The change of ownership won’t change the short-term product as only the Super Bowl this season than the Commanders.

As for the actual football, Kansas City (+650) has the best odds to win the Super Bowl followed by the Philadelphia Eagles at +800.

The top 28 players in the NFL Most Valuable Player odds are quarterbacks with the Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes leading the way at +700.

Here are some of the highlights coming out of the two days of meetings in Eagan, Minn.

Let’s Play Fair

The kickoffs continue to be pushed into the background thanks to conversations at the 2023 NFL Spring Meeting.

Following the lead of college football, the NFL has agreed to implement a fair-catch rule on kickoffs for the 2023 season.

If a fair catch is made inside the 25-yard line, the ball will be spotted at the 25 as would be the case on a touchback.

The move is being made because of research that suggests that players are more susceptible to head trauma and potential concussions while covering and returning kickoffs than a normal play over the course of a game.

Time to Flex

A resolution to all flex scheduling for Thursday night games in Weeks 13-17 have been ed during the 2023 NFL Spring Meeting.

With at least a 28-day window needed to change which teams will be playing on Thursday night in those weeks will be needed so it would take some extenuating circumstances for the flex schedule to be put into place.

Let’s take a look at the NFL teams that could be impacted if the games, set to air on Prime Video, get moved due to flex scheduling.

At the current time, the Dallas on Nov. 30 to begin the Week 13 slate.

The Week 14 Thursday night game would see the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Los Angeles Rams are currently slated to be the Thursday night game in Week 16 a game four days before Christmas.

The Cleveland Browns would play on Dec. 28 to begin the Week 17 schedule and there would be plenty of eyes on quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Deshaun Watson in that matchup.

The 2023 NFL season will kick off with a Thursday night affair between the Detroit Lions and the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs on Sept. 7 in Kansas City.

The Chiefs are currently favored by seven points as the Chiefs look to top the NFL division standings by winning the AFC West Division title for the eighth year in a row. The Chiefs are priced at -115 to be a division champion yet again.

Feel A Draft

The NFL announced that the 2025 NFL Draft will be held in Green Bay.

It would be the first time the draft would be held in the state of Wisconsin since the 1940 event took place at the Schroeder Hotel in Milwaukee.

Beginning in 1965, the draft was held at various locations in the New York City area as the event reached stunning levels of interest and unprecedented media attention.

So far the top pick in the 2025 NFL Draft that has been traded is Carolina’s second-round selection that was included in a deal that landed the Panthers the No. 1 overall pick in 2023. That was used to select quarterback Bryce Young.

The draft was held in Cleveland in 2021, and in Las Vegas in 2022. The 2020 draft was supposed to be in Las Vegas before the global pandemic turned the 2020 event into a virtual-only extravaganza. Kansas City held the 2023 draft with the 2024 event set to be held in Detroit.

Speaking about the 2024 NFL Draft, Southern California quarterback Caleb Williams, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, has -550 odds to be the No. 1 pick. He is followed by North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye at +400 and Ohio State receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. at +1000.
