Chance at Two Belts for Benavidez
The 27-year-old is already the interim super middleweight title holder, and now he wants the light heavyweight belt.
Benavidez is picked to be the next contender to face Canelo, but first he needs to get past Gvozdyk, who is a formidable opponent.
He comes off some impressive wins, including a decision win over Demetrius Andrade for the interim title.
Beating Andrade was a big moment for Benavidez, as he was 32-0. That was a quality performance, and he forced Andrade to retire in the sixth round.
He says he doesn’t care about a potential future fight against Canelo.
“I really don’t care about Canelo,” Benavidez said. “If he didn’t want to get the fight at 168, we’re at 175 now and we’re looking to face the best here.
“Oleksandr Gvozdyk is a great fighter. I’m prepared for him. We actually sparred when I was 21 years old. I know he’s in the best shape of his life. We’ve got two warriors going up against each other. We had a hell of a sparring session — three sparring sessions, to be exact.”
It’s good to see him focusing on the task at hand, and boxing betting markets give him every chance to win. His odds of -700 are short, especially when rising in weight, but we’re not surprised.
He’s the fighter they have come to watch, and Benavidez vs Gvozdyk odds could see him firm closer to fight time.
Can Gvozdyk Do the Unthinkable?
We have seen bigger upsets in the ring, but Gvozdyk beating Benavidez would be a massive upset.
The 37-year-old Ukrainian comes off consecutive knockout wins, but the better form guide comes with his 10th round TKO loss to Artur Beterbiev.
The 2019 fight ended when Gvozdyk was knocked down three times in one round, but up until that point, he was right in the contest.
He’s also a former WBC light heavyweight title holder, so the +450 underdog shouldn’t be overlooked because he’s the massive underdog.
Age might be against him, but he fights a smaller Benavidez, and he comes off a second round knockout of Isaac Rodrigues.
Spurred on by the success of Oleksandr Usyk, and the pride of returning to his home country to help fight the war, it could be enough to see him win.
“I have been there a lot of times (since war broke out), doing charitable stuff there and helping the Ukrainian military, fixing military trucks and providing ammunition,” Gvozdyk said.
“I feel I can beat him because I believe in myself. I have been training hard and I know what I am capable of. I do not care what people think. I will figure it out.”
Boxing picks and parlays are unlikely to include him, but he’s a tough fighter to bet against. He has been here before and prevailed, but Benavidez is a fighter destined for greatness, and he’s still so young.
Taking the Shorts with Benavidez
We usually look for better value than -700, but we think he’s worth including in parlays at that price.
For more risk, bettors could include Benavidez by decision, as we think the fight could go the distance, but that comes with more risk.
Benavidez vs Gvozdyk odds have the total rounds line at 8.5, which the over priced at -140. Most of the money has come for the over, which we’re including in our boxing picks.
Benavidez should grind his opponent down and win by points. Gvozdyk is a brave fighter, who has lost just once throughout his career, and it came to Beterbiev.
We would have Beterbiev favored to beat Benavidez, so we’re giving him the respect he deserves.
