The game has been played in Orlando since 2001. Yet, before that, the event was held at Miami Gardens and had been since 1990. Originally, the name of the Cheez-It Bowl was set to the Sunshine Classic.

However, a constant change in sponsorship has led to more changes in the name of the bowl, ranging from Blockbuster, Florida Tourism, Mazda, Russell Athletic, and now Cheez-It. 

 

In 1998, Miami featured an outstanding performance against NC State. That year the Hurricanes pulled a 46-23 win, breaking the record for the most recorded in the history of the event at the time.

Just a year later, the Fighting Illini were able to pull off a 63-21 win over Virginia and quickly took away the title from Miami as the NCAAF team with the highest number of points recorded in the history of the Cheez-It Bowl.
