Goodyear 400 History & Highlights

The first Goodyear 400 was held on September 4, 1950, and was won by Johnny Mantz. The race was part of the inaugural NASCAR Strictly Stock Series, which later became the Cup Series. The race was held at the Darlington Raceway, which was a relatively new track at the time, having opened in 1950.

The race quickly became one of the premier events on the NASCAR schedule, with some of the biggest names in the sport vying for the coveted victory. The likes of Lee Petty, Richard Petty, Bobby Allison, Cale Yarborough, and Jeff Gordon have all won the Goodyear 400.

Over the years, the race has undergone several changes. It was initially a 400-mile race, but it was reduced to 367 laps in 1968. It was then increased to 400 laps in 1974, and the distance was changed to 500 miles in 2005. However, the race was shortened back to 400 miles in 2021.

The Goodyear 400 has also seen several notable moments throughout its history. In 1985, Bill Elliott won the race while driving with a broken wrist, which he sustained during a practice session. In 2003, Ricky Craven and Kurt Busch engaged in an epic battle in the closing laps, with Craven ultimately coming out on top by a margin of 0.002 seconds, which is the closest finish in Cup Series history at Darlington.

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced NASCAR to reschedule the race from its original date in the spring to May 17, making it the first Cup Series race held during the pandemic. Kevin Harvick won the race, which was held without fans in attendance.

The Goodyear 400 has been a staple of the NASCAR Cup Series for over 70 years.
